In this digital age, it is more important than ever to make great first impressions with your personal brand.  First impressions have to be, at a minimum, great.  Not good, and definitely not just satisfactory.

The Why

Why is it so important to make great first impressions with your personal brand?

The Goldfish and the Judgement

We’ve all heard the fact that humans have an attention span of less than a goldfish, less than seven seconds. Even more startling is the fact that you have only three seconds to grab someone’s attention to keep them on your website or social media pages. And, the most mind-boggling statistic, which solidifies my passion for personal branding, is that it takes less than one second, 30 milliseconds in fact, for someone to look at you and decide if you are attractive or trustworthy. 

The How

Now that we have established reasons why first impressions are so important for your personal brand, let’s talk about how you can create first impressions that will have an impact. Visual content is going to be the best, easiest, and fastest way to make great first impressions.

Professional Headshot

Let’s start with a professional headshot.   At a minimum, you should have a professional headshot that shows everyone who you are and that you care about quality and are professional.  Your headshot should be on your social media profiles and on your website.  Your goal is not only to make a great first impression but to become recognizable.  Using the same profile picture across all platforms consistently will help you achieve this.

Personal Branding Photography

Personal branding photographs are also important.  Your ideal audience wants to know who you are, what you do, and how you do it.  Having images that detail who you are and what you do helps your potential clients understand more about you and get to know you.   When they don’t have to dig to find out about you, you have successfully been present and made a great first impression.


We don’t want to forget about written content.  You also have an opportunity to make a great first impression by having written content that is informative, educational, and entertaining.  When your audience sees you and reads about you, you will not only make a great first impression but a lasting impression.   Use the two types of content to complement each other in a clear, concise, and consistent way and you will succeed in making great first impressions with your personal brand!
