As small business owners, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Never ending to-do lists and quite often, a one-person show. Growing a small business can also feel lonely if you’re a solopreneur.
Have you said to yourself, “I feel overwhelmed” as you walk your entrepreneurial journey? I think most solopreneurs feel overwhelmed and lonely at one point in time or another. But Psalm 25:4-5 provides comfort and hope for all of us. It reads: “Show me your ways, LORD, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.”
It is common for small business owners, especially solopreneurs to feel overwhelmed.
Growing a business is challenging there’s no doubt about it. The to-do lists are often long and grow much faster than they shrink. It’s easy to think that you don’t know where to begin. In addition, you may feel stuck and fear and doubt may hold you back, especially when a launch doesn’t go well or someone says no to hiring you. And you may experience confusion because of all of the advice you see online. Or maybe you’ve hired multiple people to help you, or taken multiple courses, and now you don’t know what to do or when to do it. It’s overwhelming, and I hear that from my clients all the time.
Belief and faith become very important when you are trying to grow a business
Here’s where faith and belief come into play.
To grow a successful business you need to believe that God has a purpose for you and that there are people who will hire you, who need you to solve a problem for them.
You need to believe that you have unique gifts and talents to use to help others. This is where your story and journey to get to where you are today becomes an important factor in your beliefs.
Likewise, you also need to believe that your soulmate clients exist and are looking for you. That God has planted seeds in them to seek and find you.
Don’t overlook your experiences
We often overlook the experiences that formed us into the people we are today. But if you look back, you will likely see how God has led you right to where you are. This is a great exercise to do when you experience doubt. Make a list of all of the experiences that you’ve had on your journey that have helped you develop the skills and knowledge you now have to be able to do what you do.
Psalm 25:4-5 reminds us that all we have to do is seek God and he will show us His ways, the paths he wants us to take. I think we can agree that he’s also been with us along our journey.
But note, the scripture says His ways. As a person who likes to have control, it’s often a challenge to remember that I am to rely on God and do things His way. I may not want to wait for an answer so I take things into my own hands. And that never goes well. His way is the best way, always. And His timing is the best timing, perfect timing. His plan is limitless. Therefore, it behooves us to follow His ways and the path He’s chosen for us.
When in doubt ask
Waiting for an answer or direction can be frustrating. During the period of waiting, it is easy to begin to doubt. It may feel like He’s giving you the silent treatment. This is when it’s important to read scripture and pray. Do not turn from your relationship with Him, but let it be strengthened through gratitude.
In times of doubt, you are more likely to feel overwhelmed. But remember that God is your savior and your hope can be infinitely in Him. And because of that, you can ask Him, and depend on Him, to teach you and guide you. He will share His truth with you.
That is the blessing of the Holy Spirit, who, when you accepted Jesus as your savior was given to you, to reside in you. He is forever available to you for strength, guidance, knowledge, and wisdom. He is the truth. Your intuition, that gut feeling, or that little voice you hear is the Holy Spirit trying to get your attention. Are you listening for and to Him? Quite often He’s providing answers but we aren’t listening. We are too busy letting our to-do lists overwhelm us.
We have to remember to get quiet, to get still, and listen.
And, to decrease the overwhelm, implement systems and processes, automate. Simplify your business so that you can have the opportunity to step away without feeling guilty or pressured.
Don’t ask, don’t have
James 4:2-3 reminds us that we do not have because we do not ask. James also goes on to say that when you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.
Reflect on this verse if you’ve been waiting for an answer. Check your motives. Are they pure? Or, maybe, your idea of what should be is not the same as what God wants for you – it’s not the best for you. Chances are, if that’s the case, that the Holy Spirit is giving you clues. He’s been guiding you but you haven’t been listening. I’ve certainly been guilty of this.
When you feel overwhelmed help is available
As business owners, we don’t know what we don’t know.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reads, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”
Faith and entrepreneurship do go hand in hand. When you have God, you are never alone and he will always pick you up. Likewise, this is where employing a team or a coach or mentor is also beneficial. There are always pieces to be picked but it’s as important to recognize that there is an ROI when you have the help you need and accomplish things faster and with more efficiency.
